HOW DOES NB IoT SMART ACCESS CONTROL WORK?

NB IoT smart locks, part of our smart access control system, connect to the Internet via a new wireless communication technology called NarrowBand Internet of Things (NB IoT) - not Wi-Fi. Each NB IoT smart lock contains a small computer called a Microcontroller, a small modem called a NB IoT module, and a NB IoT SIM card, (similar to what you find inside a mobile phone) which enables the smart locks to connect to the NB IoT network that 'sits on' the telecommunication companies mobile network. The NB IoT network is a purpose built network for the Internet of Things devices. Up until recently if you wanted a device to connect to the internet, you would have to use Wi-Fi or 2G/3G/4G, or wired ethernet, but these technologies were designed and built specifically for humans to talk, and for sending, receiving and streaming large files. For the first time, devices or 'machines' have their own purpose built communication network, which is more secure, more reliable, and more efficient than anything else before it.

HOW IS THE NB IoT NETWORK UTILIZED IN NB IoT SMART ACCESS CONTROL?

We use the NB IoT network in 4 mains ways

1: for programming the NB IoT smart locks to work for limited time periods/authorization

2: for a live audit/live events - know who has opened the door at what time in our software/apps

3: for remote unlocking (from software and apps)

4: Notifications of activity with supporting sensors (e.g by adding a tampering sensor, or a motion sensor, or a light/proximity sensor, we can know if someone is trying to tamper with a lock, is inside a room, or if the door is closed)

HOW IS THE NB IoT NETWORK UTILIZED TO OPERATE OUR SMART ACCESS CONTROL SYSTEM LIKE A TYPICAL OFFICE/HOTEL KEYCARD SYSTEM?

The NB IoT network enables us to offer everything a typical keycard system used in offices and hotels does, but without wires. Most keycard systems used in offices and hotels are usually wired together and connected to onsite servers/computers. This wiring is usually in the hollows of doors, or in walls and ceilings and goes all over buildings. The locks need to be connected to each other so a computer can tell a specific lock at anytime to only accept a specific keycard for a specific person for a specific time. Anyone who has ever stayed in a hotel, and seen the reception staff type into a computer, and then swipe a keycard through a device, or wave it over a device is simply programming the lock to accept your card for the duration of your booked stay. And everytime you swipe your keycards, the lock has to check with the computer to see if your card is authorised for that lock, and if it is, then it lets you go in.

We add NFC to our smart access system, so that our system can be used in exactly the same way as a keycard system, but the main difference is that instead of using an onsite computer and a special device to program the NFC keycard (called an encoder box), we can program the card with a smartphone app with NFC (most Android phones include NFC).  And when we add NFC, we don't have to use the NB IoT network everytime someone wants to unlock the door - we just use the NB IoT network once to program it to accept that NFC keycard for a chosen time. The lock doesn't need to go back everytime to a computer to check if the card is authorised, because there is already a tiny computer in the lock that already knows what card is authorised after the initial programming done over the NB IoT network.

HOW IS THE NB IoT NETWORK UTILIZED TO OPERATE OUR SMART ACCESS CONTROL SYSTEM LIKE A TYPICAL SMARTLOCK?

In recent times, lock manufacturers and smart lock startups have replaced the wiring used in keycard systems with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth (or other wireless technologies such as Z-Wave or Zigbee). This enables smartphones to replace or support the keycards.  Wi-Fi/Bluetooth replaces the wires and removes the need for an onsite computer/server to communicate with the locks and vice versa. The problems with Wi-Fi/Bluetooth and other wireless communication technologies, other than requiring a lot of onsite network infrastructure, such as modems/routers/bridges, is that they are insecure and can easily be hacked. They're also unreliable, there are pairing problems, blackspots, phones are slow to connect, and you need to switch on Bluetooth separately on your phone too, which drains batteries of the phone fast. Also with Wi-Fi/Bluetooth, the lock always has to be switched on and waiting for the programming or authorisation check, so it drains the locks batteries fast, or needs to mains powered. And if you have many locks, then you usually need to have a complicated Wi-Fi mesh system installed, not just your typical home Wi-Fi modem.

NB IoT overcomes all the aforementioned wireless problems as the network is purpose built for machines with no need for onsite network infrastructure, it has better built in security, and the lock can go in and out of different sleep modes to conserve batteries.

WHAT IS THE BATTERY LIFE OF NB IoT SMART LOCKS?

4 Standard AA alkaline batteries give a life of approximately 2 years (4 openings per day)

HOW DO I KNOW WHEN THE BATTERIES ARE RUNNING LOW, AND WHAT HAPPENS IF THE BATTERIES DIE AND WILL I GET LOCKED OUT?

You receive live notifications to our software and apps when the batteries are running low. You can also view the live battery status at anytime in our software and apps. Our approved distributors can also make sure to replace your lock batteries before they run out - depending on their maintenance plans. If the batteries do run out, all of our NB IoT smart locks come with metal key overrides, so you can still use a metal key to gain access. The batteries can easily be replaced by using a standard screwdriver to remove the cover on the back of the locks (inside of the door) and putting in new batteries. The lock automatically locks when its closes everytime, so the door remains locked at all times even if the batteries get to 0%.

IS THE NB IOT NETWORK SWITCHED ON AROUND ME?

For our NB IoT smart access control system to work, you will need to be within range of a NB IoT network. You can see where the NB IoT network is switched on by checking our NB IoT network page. If you are unsure, please send us an email. Also please get in touch with our distributors, who can come out to your property with a device to check if NB IoT is switched on and has a good signal where you want to install NB IoT smart access.

IS THE NB IoT NETWORK USED FOR EVERY LOCK AND UNLOCK?

The NB IoT network is used for every remote unlock from our software at all times. Smartphones can unlock over NB IoT, but they can also unlock with NFC. For phones that have NFC (most Android phones), the NB IoT network is used only once to program the locks, and the NFC is used locally for the unlock. In a situation such as a large office, we recommend that NFC be used for regular users, and NB IoT unlock on phone be used for visitors. You can even use NFC in phones when the battery is dead with Secure Element SIM cards (please check with your local distributor/telco if your telco supplies Secure Element SIM cards). For Android users you can use our apps to make NFC stickers or NFC fobs, or bracelets (or any NFC token) with your unique unlock ID copied to the NFC token. Stick the NFC sticker on the back of your phone, or even on the back of your existing keycard to give your self access to our smart locks.

HOW SECURE IS NB IoT SMART ACCESS CONTROL?

A lock needs to provide the best security it can get, otherwise any one will be able to break into your property at anytime. NB IoT is a new secure network built specifically for smart devices to communicate. Here is how we provide the most secure access control system in the marketplace;

1. The mobile network itself, of which NB-IoT is a part, is a fully managed network with mature and standardized security to guarantee the credential and integrity of all data running in it, comparing with unlicensed solutions.

2. NB-IoT as a mobile technology is applying 3GPP standardized security protocols at chipset level (3GPP is the organisation responsible for managing the mobile phone network). The NB-IoT chipset included in our NB Smart Locks also applies 2048 Bit RSA encryption.

3. Between the vertical applications, LEAPIN’s Digital Keys Management Software, and the Device Management IoT platform, all communications are running on HTTPs military grade encryption to provide application layer securities.

All other technologies and networks used in access control technologies have been exposed in recent times as being insecure and hackable. To learn more about insecurities of other technologies please visit our page; Why Choose NB IoT Smart Access.

CAN THE NB IOT NETWORK BE USED TO DETECT FORCED BREAK IN?

Yes. However, its not currently in any of our available NB IoT locks yet. We can add tampering sensors to our NB IoT locks, that trigger an alert to a selected phone/software/emails, the instant the angle of the lock on the door changes, or a cover is removed (e.g as someone attempts to pull the lock off the door, it can instantly send the tampering alert). To add this feature to our locks or a lock of your choice, please get in contact with us info@digitalkeys.co

CAN YOUR NB IOT SMART ACCESS CONTROL SYSTEM INTEGRATE WITH OUR DEVICE MANAGEMENT PLATFORM?

Yes. If you would like us to integrate our system to your device management platform, please get in touch with us anytime by email info@digitalkeys.co. Currently our system is integrated to Huawei's OceanConnect Device Management Platform.

Each device is assigned a temporary IP address in the telco's internal cellular network when it wakes up from sleep, and the IP resource is released when the device goes back into sleep.

HOW DOES THE NB IOT SIGNAL REACH THE NB IOT COMMUNICATIONS MODULE IN YOUR LOCKS?

The PCB that contains that NB IoT module sits behind re-inforced plastic and not stainless steel, enabling the signal to penetrate.

WHAT HAPPENS IF THE SIGNAL STRENGTH IS NOT STRONG ENOUGH ON MY SITE OR REDUCES TO A LOWER SIGNAL STRENGTH?

Our NB IoT smart locks with their optimized external antenna, are certified to work at fair signal levels and above. Please send us an email at info@digitalkeys.co for an exact signal strength reading which are locks are certified to work at. If the signal strength drops at any time for any reason to a low level or is down, the back-up unlock methods of NFC, numberpad or metal key override will have to be used. Just like mobile networks going down on extremely rare occasions, the NB IoT network would only go down in an extremely rare occasion. Our local distributors/local telco will check the signal strength on your site, and make sure it means the minimum levels for use of our system, before installing our system. As the locks will remain in the same position, and generally not move around, we can be sure the lock will always work under the minimum signal strengths.

HOW DO YOUR NB IOT SMART LOCKS CONNECT TO THE NB IOT NETWORK?

Your local distributor will set up and connect your NB IoT locks to your local network before they are delivered/installed. For telco's, we need to program the lock once with your local engineers (e.g PLMN number programming) who follow our set-up instruction sheet. If you are a telco and you would like to see our set-up instruction sheet and connect to your local network with a sample NB IoT smart lock please send us an email info@digitalkeys.co

WHEN IS THE NB IoT SMART LOCK SLEEPING/NOT SLEEPING?

The NB IoT smart locks remain asleep most of the time (not draining battery). To wake the lock up and unlock your door (after you have hit unlock on digital keys app) you need to push the star button on numberpad modesl (e.g for LDK100 model), or touch anywhere on the plastic casing (e.g LDK400 model).

WHAT IS THE LATENCY ON YOUR NB IOT SMART LOCKS?

1-3 seconds for 99% of the time under fair signal strength. 1% 3-10 seconds.

CAN NB IoT BE USED FOR TWO STEP AUTHENTICATION FOR UNLOCKING?

Yes, if you purchase our NB IoT smart lock with numberpad, you can use a PIN code and the digital keys smartphone app phone as a two step authentication. Technically speaking, if using Digital Keys unlock over NB IoT network there is already a two-step authentication process where the first step is unlocking your phone with your passcode, and then hitting unlock button on Digital Keys app.

HOW MUCH DATA FLOWS OVER THE NB IOT NETWORK?

Not much. Each audit event (extraction of data about who opened the lock at what time with what opening method, or remote unlock, or programming of the lock is a few bytes  -approx 5-8 bytes.
